This 316-page monograph covers more than two decades of the career of the Barcelona studio TdB Architects, led by Juan Trias de Bes. A body of work defined by its fidelity to material, light and context, and articulated around a design ethic rather than a recognisable aesthetic.
Divided into two major sections - Refurbishment and New Construction - with projects developed at the level of plans and construction details, the publication includes emblematic projects such as Casa Burés, Palau Moxó and the headquarters of Natura Bissé, among others. Each project demonstrates a desire for precision and continuity, where technique and poetics merge in an architecture that expresses itself through constructive rigour, systematisation and dialogue with the existing.
The introduction by Josep Maria Montaner, 'The materiality of architecture. Restoring, inhabiting, working' and the text by Trias de Bes himself, 'The work continues. A reflection on the orientation of the projects', trace the theoretical framework that articulates this journey. Both emphasise how each work is part of a continuum: an investigation into the topological potential of construction and the search for a 'total construction' where form and matter reach their maximum expression.
Through each project included in this monograph, TdB Architects demonstrate how it is possible to create contemporary architecture that respects and reinterprets its context, establishing an ongoing dialogue between history, place and materiality.
